The Appalachian Trail is being impacted by the fire and hikers are asked to stay clear of the area for their own health and safety.
Also, there has been a wonderful outpouring from the local communities in bringing food and water, coffee, snacks, and such to the firefighters.

North Adams Fire Quickly Extinguishes Walker Street Blaze


 
It was a quick response, quick knockdown, and we are going to be out of here soon, Fire Chief Stephen Meranti said. Unfortunately, the occupants are going to have to deal with the damage.
 
The call came in just before 9 a.m., and Meranti said police were first to arrive at 100 Walker St. and confirmed it was a structure fire. Lt. Brent Lefebvre was on scene soon after with Engine 1.
 
We had smoke showing from the eaves all of the way around the building, Meranti said. They had heavy smoke conditions in the building.
 
Meranti said he initially thought firefighters would have to vent the roof, but the fire was mostly contained o the kitchen so this was not necessary. There were no injuries. ....

North Adams Firefighters Battle Blaze, Nonworking Hydrants


The hydrant across the street was nonfunctional and a second one at the bottom of Veazie had disappeared forcing firefighters to run hundreds of feet of hose trying to find working hydrants. 
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. Nonfunctioning fire hydrants again hampered efforts to douse a raging fire in a two-family home on Veazie Street on Friday morning. 
 
This is not acceptable. We have to do something with this, Fire Chief Stephen Meranti said later in the morning as what was left of the two-story building was demolished. Too many years of  lack of maintenance led to this point, we have to do something now. ....
