Crews respond to forest fire in Killington

Multiple fire crews responded Saturday to a forest fire in Killington, where steep terrain and dry conditions made it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze.
As many as 85 firefighters from adjacent towns in Rutland and Windsor County were on the scene on U.S. 4 in Killington, assisting the town s fire department in battling the forest fire, according to a social media post from the the Killington Police Department.
Local fire crews collaborated to hit hot spots and strengthen fire lines to contain the fire through the night. Firefighters continued working on the site into Sunday.
An underground forest fire along U.S. 4 on Deep Lear Mountain occurred last September. ....

Driver brought back to Vermont after 2015 fatal crash

A woman from Alpharetta, Georgia, is facing three felony charges after police said her negligent driving caused a crash on Route 4 in Killington that killed three people in December 2015, but the truck driver stopped coming to court in 2018.
This week, she was returned to Rutland criminal court.
Lashawn Jones, 46, of Georgia, pleaded not guilty in June 2016 in Rutland to three felony counts of grossly negligent driving with death resulting.
When Jones first appeared in court, she was represented by attorney Matthew Hart who filed a motion in April 2017 requesting that Jones not be required to attend her next court appearance in person. ....
