The village of Lakewood will again go without a Fourth of July fireworks display due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LAKEWOOD The village of Lakewood will again forgo its annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration this year.
Mayor Randy Holcomb said the annual event to celebrate the summer holiday will not be held due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Holcomb is optimistic that, because of the increase in COVID vaccinations, the ceremony will be held in 2022.
“There is interest among village trustees to hold this event,” Holcomb said, “but it is impossible to enforce social distancing within this program, so we can’t hold it.” ....

Jan. 30 Following a shooting this month in Kent that injured two police officers, the city has approved a grant that has largely reimbursed its police department for the cost of new ballistic vests.
Though the acceptance of the grant is timely, the two events are not related. Kent Police Chief Nicholas Shearer first approached Kent City Council about approving a matching grant on Jan. 6. That meeting was held 10 days before officers Kyle Auckland and Leonard Kunka were shot while responding to a burglary call.
Auckland was shot in the chest on the morning of Jan. 16, when he was among a number of officers responding to a 911 call from a 14-year-old girl who was babysitting at an East Summit Street home. She said a man, who turned out to be 40-year-old Dante Dixon, was trying to enter the residence. ....

KENT, Ohio Two Kent police officers were released from the hospital Saturday after being shot while responding to a 14-year-old babysitter’s report of a home invasion.
Police say Dante Dixon of Cleveland Heights broke into a home on East Summit Street, just south of Kent State University, about 8 a.m. Saturday. They said Dixon, 40, knew the resident, but they did not know why Dixon tried to enter. ....

KENT, Ohio Police were involved in a shooting near the Kent State University campus Saturday morning, police say.
The shooting happened on East Summit Street near Loop Road just south of the campus, Kent police Lt. Mike Lewis said.
Police say there are no fatalities as a result of the shooting.
Police did not say how many people were involved in the shooting, the names of the officers involved nor the circumstances surround the shooting.
Lewis said there will be more information about the incident in a press release by video that he hopes to release Saturday afternoon. ....

KENT, Ohio The Kent Police Department is reporting that two police officers were shot during an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning following an attempted home invasion.
According to KPD, the incident happened in the 1500 block of East Summit Street near Loop Road around 8 a.m.
In a statement released on Monday, Kent police said that it received a call from a young female inside the residence indicating that an unknown man was attempting to enter the residence. Upon arriving, two Kent police officers were immediately engaged by the 40-year-old suspect, Dante Dixon, who was armed with a handgun. ....
