CFES attend fire call at 2nd St. N and Victoria Avenue
Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services (CFES) members this morning responded to a fire call at the corner of 2nd St. N & Victoria Avenue.
After arrival CFES determined it was an alarm activation but no fire. RCMP are now investigating.
Please avoid the area completely to allow first responders to work. Those heading to or from the College of the Rockies, please detour past the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

MOH adding surgeries to catch up from pandemic
The B.C. Ministry of Health (MOH) today announced it intends to catch up on surgeries postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
MOH stated in a Jan. 6 media release that of Nov. 22, 2020, 90% of patients who had their surgery postponed during the first wave of COVID-19 were able to have their surgery completed through B.C.’s commitment to surgical renewal.
It also noted the timeline for recovery of all postponed surgeries is expected to be 15 to 22 months
“The surgical renewal commitment to patients is a massive and necessary undertaking to address postponed surgeries and meet the growing demand for surgery within British Columbia,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “Our sixth monthly report tells a remarkable story of achievement in the number of patients called, surgeries delivered, operating room hours extended, waitlists reduced, and staff hired and trained.” ....

Steeples students showcase a great giving spirit
It was an extremely busy and giving lead-up to the Christmas season for Grade 1 and 2 students at Steeples Elementary School in Cranbrook.
Teacher Kelly Henderson had her students thanking the Salvation Army, singing for seniors at Kootenay Street Village and Lions Mountain View Village and showing their thanks and gratitude to those working at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
“We wrote a letter to Salvation Army to thank them for the lunches they provide. Students created bark rubbings on our forest walk.  We took a group photo in a heart formation… and created a collaborative artwork we could give as thanks,” Henderson said. ....

New affordable homes coming to Cranbrook
People with low incomes soon will have more access to affordable homes in Cranbrook with construction underway on a 20-unit rental housing project in the community.
Located at 126 and 130 21st Ave. South, the four-storey apartment building is a redevelopment of a BC Housing-owned property and will provide one- and two-bedroom units for individuals, seniors and families. Three units will be available for people with disabilities. Monthly rents for the 20 homes are projected to range from $375 to $674.
The project is located close to many amenities and services, including Laurie Middle school, Balment Park and the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. ....
