Last Saturday was a special hike. It was a celebration of over 40 years of hiking adventures with two great friends. More about that later.
I woke up early and threw on my sweatshirt because of the chill in the air. Our plan was to hike at Post Oak Preserve in Seagoville. We were hoping to see some wildflowers. I headed out US 175, listening to the Avett Brothers, which always puts me in a good mood. I left early so I would have a moment to journal. My reaction to this imbalance was confirmed when we had the arborist from the Conservation Department assess the property. He found that the top priority of care for the forested 40 acres of the land was to thin if not eradicate the cedars. Red Cedars just don’t play well with others. Instead, they were doing what they do: impeding the health and normal growth of the hardwoods, and contributing to erosion on the hillsides. The arborist took note of a would-be glade edging the driveway entrance which was largely overtaken by the cedars. I commented that my memory of earlier days on the property held a far different vision of this glade area and indeed the woods in general. Glades are generally found on south-facing slopes and have thin soils with bedrock on or near the surface, typically surrounded by woodland. Prescribed burns at Nebraska National Forest

Fire managers on the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest have planned to conduct a series of prescribed broadcasts burns beginning the week of April 5 through May 8, 2021 as weather conditions allow.Â The broadcast burns are planned on up to 10,000 acres of native grasslands on the Bessey Ranger District.
The prescribed burns are intended to reduce the encroachment of Eastern Red Cedar trees into the native prairie.Â Staff on the District have already cut and piled about 3,000 acres of large Eastern red cedar trees off the grasslands on the Bessey Ranger District this year.
Experience from past years shows that broadcast burning kills about 90 percent of the young Eastern red cedar trees, three feet tall or less and up to half of the larger ones.Â Because we can cover large acreages, burning is the most economical method of preventing cedar encroachment.Â Low-intensity fire is a natural disturbance process that can rejuvenate the grasslands a ....

A burn ban for the month of April has been imposed in 16 counties by the State of Kansas and Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management.
Counties included in the April burn ban are Butler, Chase, Chautauqua, Cowley, Elk, Geary, Greenwood, Johnson, Lyon, Marion, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, Sedgwick, Wabaunsee, and Wyandotte.
Burning that will continue to be allowed in these counties during April include agricultural burning related to the management of prairie or grasslands (range or pasture management) and conservation reserve program (CRP) burning activities. Restricted activities include burning of materials such as land clearing debris, crop residues, construction debris, fire fighter training burns, and yard waste. ....
