East Grand Forks School Board addresses parents' concern over mask mandates

Ten of the 31 responses the board received before the start of the meeting involved a plea for the removal of mask mandates on campuses or on school buses.
Of the 31 responses, 14 came from parents of children in either grades 3 or 5. One response came from someone who has no children currently enrolled in the East Grand Forks School District.
Other responses from the survey included requests for counselors and social workers for each school; provisions for vaccinated children to not be required to quarantine due to close contact unless they develop COVID-19 symptoms; less Chromebook usage; encouragement for eligible students to receive COVID-19 vaccines; smaller class sizes; and the designation of at least one class per grade for students with mandatory mask usage for parents whose students are under 12 years old and are not eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. ....

    It’s possible.
    UMN Crookston Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause and Crookston School District Superintendent Jeremy Olson have discussed the possibility of that happening, but Olson stressed to the Times Wednesday that there is much “due diligence” for the district to work through before anything is ready to be presented to a wider audience for consideration.
    “I wouldn’t necessarily say we are in talks, but (Holz-Clause) and I have talked about it,” Olson said. “We need to walk through (the Ed Widseth Field facility), we would have questions and concerns that would need to be addressed, and we would need to have input from legal counsel and make sure we do all of our due diligence. For the first time this school year, Polk County’s average case rate has decreased.
The decrease follows a downward trend in case numbers in Polk and Grand Forks counties in recent weeks. That’s good news, said East Grand Forks Superintendent Mike Kolness, but he said Polk County Director of Public Health Sarah Reese is hesitant to get too excited just yet. ....
