17 Dressed Chickens Built a Living Legacy

In the pre-dawn hours of a Saturday morning in 1937, 24-year-old Victor Weaver and his wife, Edith, loaded 17 dressed chickens into the trunk of their 1936 Hudson Terraplane. They had prepared the chickens the prior afternoon in their small farmhouse kitchen in Blue Ball, Pennsylvania.
They took their cargo to the Sharon Hill Farmers Market, near Philadelphia. They returned to Blue Ball with an empty trunk, a little bit of cash and plans for weekly runs to Sharon Hill.
In the short space of a few months, the husband-and-wife team was processing 200 chickens a week for their blossoming business. They had outgrown the farmhouse, so they moved to nearby New Holland and hired an employee, Ben Burkholder, to help dress the birds and tend the market stand. ....

Tanzania post had a lost-letter mystery in 1983 [I Know a Story column]

It was early August 1982. Our family flew into Tanzaniaâs port city of Dar es Salaam.
Several vehicles were cleared from customs and needed to be registered. A new five-ton truck had been shipped for work in Tanzania at a project I was to be director of for that coming year.
Since the truck was new and needed to be âbroken in,â it took three days to drive to the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, through the Serengeti National Park.
We arrived in Musoma just after sunset.
Our evening meal was served by Stella Newswanger, who was expecting us on the campus where we were to live for the next year. ....

Intercourse bank building filled with childhood memories [I Know a Story column]

The bank pictured in a 1993 family photo was the First National Bank of Intercourse, located at the intersection of Old Philadelphia Pike and Newport Road (routes 340 and 772), in the small, rural village of Intercourse, Leacock Township.
In February of 1908, a meeting was held in the village to pick a committee to organize a national bank. The building lot was purchased for the sum of $235.
The architect, William P. Erisman of Lancaster, was hired for $75, and Samuel B. Futer, a local contractor, built the bank for $5,347. The bank opened for business on Oct. 10, 1908.
This bank merged with Farmers National Bank of Lititz in 1972. Two years later it became Farmers National Bank and moved to a new location at the west end of town. The bank at that location is now known as BB&T. The original building is currently home to the American Military Edged Weaponry Museum. ....
