Valpo student housing to be converted for workers

VALPARAISOÂ â The city is working to turn two apartment buildings now used for Valparaiso University students into affordable housing, Mayor Matt Murphy said.
Murphy, in his annual State of the City address, said the city is working with the owners of the four Uptown East buildings on East Lincolnway to convert the buildings as part of the cityâs Valpo Works program.
Tenants of the 119 apartments would be workers whose household income is 50% to 70% of the areaâs median, Murphy said.
âThe owners of Uptown intend to invest more than $3 million in this conversion,â Murphy said.
The Valpo Chamber and Valparaiso Economic Development Corp., both housed next door to City Hall, have agreed to help spread the word to local businesses, he said. ....

A woman in the 1100 block of West Perry Street reported at 11:28 p.m. Saturday that a neighbor was playing music loudly in a vehicle. An officer spoke with the person in the vehicle and told him to turn it down.
Police were dispatched at 8 p.m. Saturday to the 900 block of Elberon Avenue for a report of possible shots fired, but found and heard nothing in the area.
A caller at 9:24 a.m. Saturday reported a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot in the 1300 block of Pembrooke Drive. Police identified the driver, who said he was waiting to pick up a friend. ....

Deputies went to a home on Walnut Street, Washingtonville, at 11:03 p.m. Saturday, after receiving a complaint about noise, but were unable to hear anything. Deputies did notify the homeowner about the complaint.
Someone reported a break-in at Inca Aztec Self Storage, U.S. Route 62, in Knox Township at 2:55 a.m. Saturday.
A Latta Road, Unity Township, resident reported at 7:46 p.m. Sunday they were concerned a person in the area at that time was someone who had threatened them previously. Deputies explained how to obtain a protection order.
K-9 Hunter and his handler, Deputy Damin Beadnell, checked a vehicle on Dickey Drive at 11:48 p.m. Thursday at the request of Lisbon police but no narcotic indication was noted. ....
