100-acre blaze burns in Keating Valley

BAKER CITY â A fire sparked by farm equipment on the hottest June day on record in Baker County raced through dry grass and sagebrush in Keating Valley, threatening several homes before crews from multiple agencies, with help from a pair of air tankers, stopped the blaze Tuesday, June 29.
âIt really took off in 110-degree heat with 20-mile-an-hour winds behind it,â said Buzz Harper, chief of the Keating Rural Fire Protection District. âIn that heat and wind it could have been real bad.â
The fire burned about 100 acres, Harper said. No homes were damaged.
Baker County Sheriff Travis Ash said the sheriffâs office gave evacuation notices to about 10 residents as a precaution. ....

Wolves from Keating Pack kill calf

BAKER CITY â Wolves from the Keating Pack killed a four-month-old calf on a private pasture north of Keating Valley last weekend, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
A ranch employee checking cattle the morning of Monday, May 31, found the dead calf, which had been dragged under a fence. The carcass was about 12 feet outside the fence for the 400-acre private pasture.
The carcass was intact and had not been scavenged, according to an ODFW report. An ODFW biologist who examined the carcass May 31 estimated the calf had died 24 to 36 hours earlier.
The biologist skinned the carcass and found pre-mortem tooth scrapes on the rear of both back legs, the groin and behind the front right elbow. Underlying muscle trauma extended at least 1Â½ inches deep, according to the ODFW report. ....

It all started because Strus, who moved to Baker County around 2005, wanted to go fishing at Balm Creek Reservoir. He had tried to reach the reservoir some days before from the west, via Medical Springs, but was turned back by snowdrifts. ....
