Bobby Leopold Avenges 2019 Loss, Wins Third Rhode Island Amateur

LINCOLN – At the end of one of the longest weeks in the history of the Rhode Island Amateur, Bobby Leopold cemented his name among the elites.
Leopold, a previous two-time champion (2009, 2014), put on a ball-striking clinic to defeat Pawtucket Country Club’s Andrew O’Leary, 5&4, to claim the 116th Rhode Island Amateur Sunday at Kirkbrae Country Club (par 72, 6,647 yards).
He played the 32 holes in bogey-free 10 under, including a 65 in the first 18 holes while O’Leary shot 70. That gave Leopold a 5-up edge heading into the second 18.
“Today my ball-striking was stupid,” said Leopold. “I stood over my driver on each hole and told myself to hit it as hard as I could each time. I was hitting bullets with the driver. It was one of those days where everything seemed to go well. My body felt good. I wasn’t tired and my body wasn’t in pain.” ....

Top Seed Goes Down in Round of 16 at RI Amateur

For McKinley Slade, eight years ago was in a whole other life.
In 2013, he reached the Quarterfinals of the 108th Rhode Island Amateur at Quidnessett Country Club as an 18-year-old on his way to Bryant University. He fell to Wannamoisett Country Club’s Bobby Leopold, 1-up.
“There’s not as much pressure,” said Slade. “When I was a kid, all I was doing was playing competitive golf. Since I took some time away from playing competitively, when I came back, golf didn’t seem like life or death. Now I have a job and other things in life to focus on. Golf is a hobby for me now, not the career it felt like while playing junior golf.” ....

North Providence High solidifies graduation, senior events

NORTH PROVIDENCE – After a tumultuous and unpredictable 14 months navigating the unexpected challenges of the pandemic, graduating seniors at North Providence High School are ready to celebrate.
While they missed out on countless opportunities during their junior and senior year as a result of the pandemic, members of the Class of 2021 will be able to experience their senior prom and an in-person graduation.
Senior prom is set for June 9 at the Kirkbrae Country Club in Lincoln. The event will be limited to NPHS seniors only, and students will not be able to bring guests. All students must test negative for COVID-19 within 48 hours of the event and provide proof of the negative test to attend. There will be no exceptions to this policy, say school officials. They’ll also be required to wear masks when away from their tables, but may remove them briefly to take pictures. ....

Johnson twins named top two students at CHS
Twins Brendan, left, and Shane Johnson have been named Cumberland High School s Class of 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.
CUMBERLAND – Twins Brendan and Shane Johnson do almost everything together, from homework at their dining room table to a list of extracurricular activities.
Now the brothers have been named the top two students in Cumberland High School’s Class of 2021: Brendan, with a GPA of 4.9453, as valedictorian, and Shane, with a 4.8739 GPA, as salutatorian.
Shane told The Breeze that he was surprised that both he and his brother received this honor, especially given how many talented students are in the Class of 2021. “To be able to share this honor with him, it’s extremely gratifying and humbling,” he said. ....
