In the period before the first national lockdown (6 Jan – 22 Mar 2020), there was an average of 709 contacts a month from adults worried a child was being placed at risk by their parent or carer’s use of drink and/or drugs.
In the ten months since then (1 Apr – 31 Jan 2021) this increased to an average of 1,178 contacts a month, with a record 1,369 in October alone. ....

There has been a huge increase in the number of reports about parental misuse of drink or drugs during the pandemic.
The children’s charity NSPCC says that in the West Midlands it has nearly doubled the number of cases it has referred on to agencies such as the police or s children’s services.
Overall in the UK the number of calls to the charity’s Helpline has risen 66% since April 2020.
The NSPCC then refer on any they think are serious enough to need further investigation.
In the West Midlands area the number of referrals they have made is up a whopping 72%. ....

NEW figures show the average monthly number of referrals made by the NSPCC Helpline about parental substance misuse in the East of England has more than doubled since the start of the pandemic.
Referrals are made to external agencies such as the police and children’s services when concerns reported to the helpline are considered to be serious enough to warrant further investigation or if it is felt a family needs support.
Nationally, the number of people calling the NSPCC Helpline with concerns about parents’ use of drugs and alcohol has increased by 66% since the first lockdown. ....
