Dear Campus Community,
Effective today, the University of Maryland is implementing urgent interventions to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on our campus:
All students living in residence halls and on-campus fraternity and sorority houses must sequester-in-place, effective at 12:00 noon today.
All students living off-campus in the greater College Park area are strongly encouraged to stay home as much as possible and limit your activities.
All in-person instruction for undergraduate and graduate courses will transition to online instruction beginning on Monday, February 22.
Approved laboratory research activities, already operating at 50% capacity and with strict masking and distancing precautions, may continue as scheduled. ....

UMD Tells Students to 'Sequester in Place' Amid COVID-19 Outbreaks – NBC4 Washington

UMD has been grappling with several clusters of three or more cases and outbreaks of five or more cases in on- and off-campus housing, the school said. Students who live off-campus are encouraged to stay home and limit activities.

“We do not take lightly that these new measures impact everyday lives. We are keenly aware of the toll this virus is taking on our collective and individual mental health,” University President Darryll J. Pines said on Twitter.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) released a statement Saturday which issued a harsh rebuke of the university’s handling of the pandemic, saying the union s “calls for greater safety measures, procedures, and protocols have been ignored for too long and this is part of the reason we continue to have bad outcomes on campuses.” ....

University of Maryland, College Park has canceled in-person classes for at least one week and has ordered students living on campus to sequester in place after a surge in coronavirus cases.
“Effective today, the University of Maryland is implementing urgent interventions to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on our campus,” said university President Darryll J Pines in a letter to the school community on Saturday.
