Labour says reports of up to 8,000 tourists arriving a day are 'staggering'

Labour has said it is “completely outrageous” that up to 8,000 tourists may be arriving in Britain every day and demanded the government tighten up its hotel quarantine system to avoid new coronavirus variants being brought into the country.
Nick Thomas-Symonds, the shadow home secretary, said ministers were not doing enough to secure the borders after the Times reported the statistic, as well as other figures including that as many as 90% of arrivals at Gatwick airport are tourists. ....

Blind asylum seeker suicidal after Home Office inaction on claim

A blind asylum seeker says she has been left suicidal after the Home Office has failed to interview her about her case since she arrived in the UK 19 months ago.
Sanaz Derikvandi, 33, was studying for a PhD in English literature in her home country of Iran when she says she had to flee because she converted to Christianity.
Though she is blind due to glaucoma and more than 30 operations have failed to restore her sight, she travelled overland by lorry through Europe with her mother, Fatemeh Derikvandi, 59. They arrived in the UK in August 2019, many months before the pandemic started. ....

Fewer than one in six 'hostile environment' raids led to deportations | Immigration and asylum

Fewer than one in six of more than 44,000 “intelligence-led” Home Office immigration enforcement raids on people’s homes since the introduction of the “hostile environment” policy have resulted in deportations, according to data obtained by the Guardian.
According to a freedom of information (FoI) response provided to the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants by the Home Office, between 2015 and 2019 there were 44,225 raids on private homes resulting in just 7,578 people deported. There were also 190 raids carried out on care homes resulting in just 37 care workers removed from the UK.
Mary Atkinson, campaigns officer at JCWI, said: “These figures show just how out of control the hostile environment has become. Carers are being arrested in the middle of their shifts, often as they look after elderly and vulnerable people – it is difficult to see who could possibly benefit from that. Our ....
