Online fundraiser, celebration for Maine Children's Home to include readings by Maine authors

Maine authors Chris Van Dusen, Cynthia Lord, Juliese Padgett, Lynn Plourde, Earl Smith, and Maine Humorist Gary Crocker will be reading their work and sharing their creativity during an online fundraising celebration benefitting Maine Children’s Home on Thursday, June 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 
The online and live-streamed event will conclude a month-long fundraiser called There’s No Place Like Home, which includes an online raffle from May 10 to June 14 and a silent auction from May 26 to June 14. While the evening with the Maine authors on June 17 will be streamed live to Facebook and YouTube, those who register early for the live event are entered to win a door prize of $100+ in value.  ....

BYU study shows excessive social media use puts teen girls at higher risk for suicide; author shares tips to mitigate risk


PROVO A recent BYU study revealed a disturbing correlation between excessive use of social media by young girls and an increased risk of suicide. But the author of the study says there are many things parents can do to mitigate the risks.
The study, which to date is the longest to examine the impact of social media use on teens, tracked the social media habits and mental health of 500 boys and girls from 2009 to 2019.
We found that a high and increasing trajectory of social media use starting at age 13 was related to increased suicide risk in emerging adulthood, said BYU professor Sarah Coyne, who led the study. ....
