Major irregularities have been detected in the lists of the National Registry of Citizens in Assam and a comprehensive re-verification should be conducted, the state s NRC coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma has sought in a petition filed in the Supreme Court. The irregularities, he said, have been detected in the final draft as well as the supplementary list. While ineligible names were included, many eligible names have also been excluded, he said in his petition. ....

GUWAHATI : Assam’s new state coordinator for National Register of Citizens (NRC) has submitted before Gauhati high court that the computer software used in the family tree verification process for updating the list of Indian citizens in the state was designed to help data entry operators with ‘doubtful integrity’ to include names of ‘large number’ of ineligible persons in the list and without a “thorough re-examination” of the process such wrongful inclusions will remain.
Hitesh Dev Sarma, who took charge as the state coordinator after his predecessor Prateek Hajela, who had completed the NRC updating process left the state on an inter-cadre deputation to Madhya Pradesh while in his affidavit before Gauhati High Court, “It can be concluded that the software prepared for matching of Family Tree has no provision for quality checks. Rather the software was so prepared to avoid any quality checks giving the verifying officers of doubtful integrity ....
