GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Efforts to build a new high school in Guntersville hit a major roadblock.
It would have replaced the current one, which is almost 50 years old and needs upgrades.
“And the big courtyard they were supposed to have with the school to help with getting classrooms outside during the day and I think that helps with the classroom learning abilities,” said Guntersville High School student Sarah Wright.
795 people voted against the property tax increase, one voter said he was worried the increase would drive up costs for everyone in the city. ....

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The polls are officially closed in Guntersville and the results are in, the vote for a new high school did not pass.
The vote failed with 571 votes for the new school and 795 votes against it.
The new high school would replace the current Guntersville High School which is 50-years-old, and the construction would cost $43 million.
That money would come from raising the mill rate to 7.5. That amounts to a $75 increase for every $100,000 worth of property. ....

Guntersville voters said No to a property tax hike that would have funded a new $43 million Guntersville High School.
The work that s done in that facility and it s done every day is a testament to those employees, said Dr. Jason Barnett, incoming Guntersville City Schools Superintendent.
Right now, hundreds of students walk the halls of Guntersville High, built in 1971. Incoming Guntersville Superintendent Dr. Jason Barnett explained that some rooms don t have windows, and some are just too small. ....

Jessica Hanners’ culinary journey has taken her from Tuscaloosa to Portland, Charleston to Atlanta.
Now, she’s back home in a little fishing hamlet on Guntersville Lake in the northeast corner of Alabama, where she’s the chef and owner of an off-the-beaten path dining gem that she has affectionately named Homecoming Café & Country Store.
“South Sauty Creek is where we are,” Jessica explains to an out-of-towner. “That’s what our little community is called. It doesn’t even show up on a map. The closest dot is Langston.” ....

On Monday, the Guntersville City Council approved going forward with a property tax vote. 
Residents are set to vote on May 11. The vote would increase property taxes by 7.5 mills.
Proceeds would go to help fund a new, $43 million Guntersville High School. The current high school was built in 1971. 
In 2019, the Guntersville City Council approved a 1 cent sales tax increase to help fund a new high school, among other projects. The superintendent at the time told WAAY 31 that the increase wouldn t be enough to fund the new high school.  ....
