'Dire need' to boost Bowen's economic prospects

Bowen business leaders have not held back in sharing their thoughts on a newly released town masterplan, labelling it a “feel good document” that fails to address a “dire need” to develop and diversify the local economy.
The Whitsunday Regional Council’s draft plan to “help shape Bowen’s potential” recently went out for community consultation, and Bowen Chamber of Commerce chairman Bruce Hedditch has been vocal about its shortcomings.
He claims it does not provide the roadmap for industrial promotion and economic development the town needs.
Mr Hedditch said empty shops and declining property values should be indicators “there is a dire need in Bowen for something to happen’. ....

Bravus shelves plans for Bowen office development

Mining giant Bravus has halted plans to revive a vacant block of council land in the heart of Bowen in a decision that has disappointed the local business community,
Whitsunday Regional Council in October last year approved the sale of a 1.017ha block at 9D Dalrymple Street to Bravus, formerly Adani.
The new building, designed to replace the rail company’s “temporary” office on Williams Street, would have created 50 jobs, a spokesman said ahead of the approval.
But Bowen Chamber of Commerce chairman Bruce Hedditch said the $710,000 sale was no longer going ahead as planned, and the community had not been given a satisfactory explanation. ....

Revealed: Adani's ties to Myanmar junta


Ports of Complicity: Adani Ports in Myanmar, released on March 30, published leaked documents revealing the details of Adani Ports’ contract with the Myanmar military owned and operated company, Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC).
Adani Ports, also known as Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), is an Adani group subsidiary with interests across South East Asia.
Ports of Complicity revealed that in 2019, Adani Ports paid a minimum of US$30 million in land lease fees and a further US$22 million in land clearance fees to the MEC.
In 2019, the UN Human Rights Council’s International Independent Fact-Finding Mission to Myanmar revealed that the MEC is owned and directed by high-ranking military officials, including the Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Vice Senior General Soe Win. ....
