Farmers protest against farm laws, at Ghazipur border. NEW DELHI: The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), a joint platform of farmers’ groups spearheading the agitation against the three central farm laws, on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention for resumption of talks with farmers on their key demands including repeal of the three laws and legal guarantee to procurement at minimum support price (MSP). In the backdrop of death of farmers due to Covid19 at their protest site at Singhu Border, the SKM underlined that though the protesting farmers do not wish to expose anyone to the health hazards during the pandemic, they will not give up on the struggle as it is a “matter of life and death for them, and for their future generations”. ....
The protesting farmers on Thursday rejected the Centre’s proposal to suspend the implementation of the three contentious laws for 18 months, taking the stand that the 143 “martyred” farmers had died seeking repeal and not such half-measures. “The SKM pays homage to the 143 farmers who have been martyred in this movement so far. These companions are separated from us while fighting this mass movement. Their sacrifice will not go in vain and we will not go back without the repealing of these farm laws,” the Samyukta Kisan Morcha said in a statement. The decision by the SKM, which has been spearheading the farmers’ protest, was announced on Thursday night after three rounds of meetings over the 24 hours since the offer had been made. ....
On Chaduni’s meeting at Constitution Club with leaders of different parties including Congress and AAP, SKM said, “Any organisation and party is free to extend its support. However, SKM and the movement will not have any direct engagement with any political party.” Seeking to clarify his position, Kakkaji released a video message saying, “A daily newspaper has published a news regarding Gurnam Singh Chaduni ji, in which they have stated that it is Kakkaji’s claim that Chaduni has taken Rs 10 crore. I did not make any such a statement. Chaduni ji is my friend and I worry about him. Whatever decision was taken yesterday (on Sunday), it was done in the meeting. I refute this statement published in a vernacular newspaper.” ....

However, Mr. Chaduni will continue to be part of the delegation of unions negotiating with the Centre for now. Mr. Chaduni had written letters to political parties in relation to the ongoing protest against farm laws on Delhi’s borders, and had allegedly met some politicians at Delhi’s Constitution Club on Sunday.
