Elkins looks at uses for federal funds | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS Elkins City Council is developing a strategy plan about how to use the millions of dollars it is set to receive from the American Rescue Plan Act.
The plan, which was signed last month, will send $677 million to West Virginia’s municipal governments. The City of Elkins is set to receive around $2.9 million, which was determined based on census data collected by the federal government.
“I sent a memo to the council, mayor and administrative officers that outlined a proposal to consider the American Rescue Plan Act funds that the city is anticipated to receive,” City Clerk Jessica Sutton said during a presentation at this week’s Elkins City Council meeting. “What this memo lays out is a proposal to have some guidance and framework as we move forward in making decisions about the best use for this money.” ....

Elkins to return to in-person meetings | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS The City of Elkins has announced plans to return to in-person city council and committee meetings at the beginning of March.
“Effective March 1, we intend to go back to in-person committee meetings, which will be held in council chambers,” City Clerk Jessica Sutton said at last week’s Elkins City Council meeting. “The in-person City Council meetings, including the canvass meetings, we intend to hold at the Phil Gainer Center, barring any changes that occur.
“That is just related to the amount of space that we have available, and the number of council people that we have, and the number of administrative officers that are required to attend the meetings, and then allowing for the public. Trying to hold those meetings in council chambers would be very challenging. ....

Elkins Council votes down ATV ordinance | News, Sports, Jobs

ELKINS Elkins City Council voted down a proposed ordinance Thursday evening that would have allowed ATVs and UTVs to drive on city streets.
Three council members voted in favor of the proposed ordinance Thursday, while seven members voted against it. The proposal had been returned to the Rules and Ordinance Committee for revision after it divided council on a 5-5 vote in December.
City Clerk Jessica Sutton began the discussion of the proposed ordinance at Thursday’s meeting by saying it had been “substantively changed,” although several council members then criticized the proposal and said it had not been changed enough. ....
