Riley County commissioners voted 2-1 to demolish the former First Christian Church Property on Monday.
The property was first bought last year, when former commissioners Ron Wells and Marvin Rodriguez were joined by current Commission Chair John Ford. The property was purchased for around $852,000. Wells and Rodriguez voted in favor of the purchase, with Ford being the lone vote against.
Before making the final decision, Brent Bowman with BBN Architects presented a space study to the commission. He suggested the county conduct a new study on the church. This is due to several changes that have occurred since the previous study, including the pandemic. Bowman says the county may have more people working from home in the future, decreasing the amount of space needed. ....

Riley County considering adjustments to addressing in unincorporated areas to support 911
Riley County Commissioners have given the Next Generation 911 committee direction to move forward naming, renaming and in some cases, renumbering private roads in unincorporated parts of the county.
The goal is improving safety for emergency services, who may be called out to certain parts of the county that don’t match up with its numbering grid and could cause a delay in someone getting help. County Clerk Rich Vargo said Thursday it’s a contentious issue for many residents, tied to emotions and a resistance to change.
“At some point in time, everyone needs to be brought up to the same standards for the services that all these people provide.” said Vargo. “If there’s a fire it may be easy to spot where the location is, but if I’m having a heart attack he may not be able to find me.” ....

Women to make up majority of Riley County Law Board in 2021
For the first time since its creation in 1974, the board that governs the Riley County Police Department will have four women on it in 2021.
Manhattan City Commissioner Linda Morse and incoming Riley County Commissioner Kathryn Focke are the two elected representatives to the Law Board. BeAtta Stoney and Patricia Hudgins are the two citizen representatives. Morse and Stoney were both reappointed to their positions. It’s the first time women will make up the majority of the voting body.
Stoney and Hudgins were both nominated by the Manhattan City Commission. Outgoing law board member Wynn Butler explains the process for selecting new Law Board members. ....
