MassDevelopment fosters community connections to help Worcester overcome unique challenges

State economic-development agency MassDevelopment – which provides financing solutions such as low-interest loans and tax credits to developers, businesses, nonprofits and communities – has been a major player in Worcester’s urban growth initiatives.
Part of the city’s multilayered, collaborative approach involving state, federal and local partners, MassDevelopment offers programs in areas of real estate, financing and more specialized sectors, such as manufacturing.
When it comes to these programs, Worcester Chief Development Officer Peter Dunn says the city has taken part in just about all of them. ....

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. called Gabby s death preventable.
Alyson Lowell wiped tears from her eyes Wednesday, choking up with emotion as she stood just feet from where her 20-year-old daughter was struck and killed by a driver texting at the wheel nearly three years ago.
The tears did fade for a smile when Lowell was able to press the button on a new traffic light installed in honor of her daughter, Gabriella “Gabby” Lowell, bright lights telling signaling to drivers on Grafton Street to stop for pedestrians. Lowell and family members entered the crosswalk together. ....

In her Feb. 1 op-ed “They have a big local impact — and deserve local funding,” Marcella Bombardieri rightly notes the value of community colleges to the economy and in providing opportunities to students who otherwise may not have access to higher education. But she is wrong to ask strapped communities to pay for these colleges. It’s the state’s duty to support public higher education. ....

After turbulent year, call for rest, reflection at Worcester MLK breakfast


WORCESTER Following a year that put renewed focus on the continued struggle for racial equality, the Rev. John Vaughn advised viewers to take a moment for rest and reflection during his keynote address to the 36th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast. 
This year s breakfast was held virtually on Monday and hosted on Quinsigamond Community College s website. The event is usually held at Quinsigamond Community College s campus.
The abbreviated breakfast included a video introduction from master of ceremonies Larry Schuyler, a video address from Mayor Joseph Petty and musical performances taken from a recording of the 2017 MLK Day Breakfast.  ....
