Good morning - shortly after lunchtime on Wednesday, whispers began to circulate in political circles about a “liberal” stance being taken by the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) as it considered its advice to Government.
Until then, the general expectation had been that May would see more of the incremental reopening that has characterised months of policymaking this year.
However, the pace of developments on Wednesday afternoon took even Coalition figures and Ministers by surprise. Dates for reopening things like personal services, which had been expected later in the month, were pulled forward, while it seemed outdoor hospitality - which wasn’t expected until June - could be on the cards for May, as might intercounty travel. ....

Micheál Martin says NI assembly could stay in united Ireland

A Northern Ireland Executive and assembly could be retained in a united Ireland, the taoiseach has said.
Micheál Martin said support would be provided from Dublin in external matters , with British government input also.
He said it would be a three-way relationship.
Meanwhile, a poll suggests a majority on both sides of the border want an NHS-style health system in a united Ireland.
In Northern Ireland, 82% of people agreed that Ireland should adopt a British-style health care system with no charges for prescriptions or A&E and GP visits.
In the Republic of Ireland, 70% of people agreed with the proposition. ....

A majority of people on both sides of the Irish border believes Northern Ireland will have left the UK within 25 years, a poll suggests.
Most respondents said they thought NI would still be part of the UK in 10 years time, but not in 25 years.
In NI, 49% of people said if there was a border poll today they would vote to remain in the UK, with 43% backing a united Ireland and 8% undecided.
The poll was commissioned by BBC NI s Spotlight programme.
In the Republic of Ireland, where a vote would have to be held in parallel with any border poll in Northern Ireland, 51% said they would vote for a United Ireland, 27% would vote for Northern Ireland to stay in the UK and 22% were not sure. ....
