WHILE most people are focused entirely on the manifesto promises being made by the many political parties that will be contesting local elections in October (and of course, we should know who and what we are voting for), at Proudly South African we will have an additional interest in the parties’ activities.
Elections represent millions of rand spent collectively on campaigns and rallies. Millions of rand spent on T-shirts, caps, other give-aways, gazebos, posters and pamphlets, among many other promotional, some might say propaganda, items. ....

'All systems go' for IEC's Political Party Funding Act


The Political Party Funding Act (6 of 2018), which compels political parties to disclose their sources of funding for amounts above R100 000, has come into effect. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said on Wednesday it is pleased it is “all systems go” for the Act to be operational from the beginning of April.
President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Act into law on 22 January 2019 and promulgated it in February this year.
The Act regulates the public and private funding of political parties with the aim being to establish transparency and trust between the public and political parties. 
“The implementation of the Act introduces a new era of transparency within South Africa’s electoral democracy, mandating all political parties to disclose donations above R100 000 to the electoral commission. The Act also sets restrictions on sources of funding for political parties,” the IEC said. ....

Corruption Watch wrote to the Presidency on 3 December 2020 urging the setting of a starting date for the Political Party Funding Act before 1 April 2021, in time for the local government elections. Otherwise, the transparency lobby group would go to court for an interdict to compel commencement.
“Corruption Watch welcomes the response from the Presidency at the end of 2020 confirming that, following consultations between the Department of Home Affairs and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the Act will be proclaimed on or before 1 April 2021,” it said on 9 January.
However, no further details could be obtained from the Presidency and a call to Home Affairs (the IEC falls into this portfolio) also failed to yield clarity.
