Student academic measures reveal varied results

NEWLAND â The Avery County Board of Education received updates on student test scores during its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 9. The scores revealed that Avery students, like other students regionally and statewide, have struggled this past semester to varying degrees as a result of the challenging times.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Brigman started off the evening by reflecting on the events and changes that took place a year ago during his superintendentâs report.
âThis week is a very special week for school here in Avery County and across North Carolina. This was the last week last year of face-to-face instruction that occurred during the 2019-2020 school year, as the governor announced the shutdown of all public schools on Saturday, March 14, 2020,â Brigman said. âI clearly remember where I was when I received the news of the shutdown and all that occurred on that day and each day thereafter. Starlink begins offering satellite internet service in western NC

AVERY COUNTY â An innovative partnership between Elon Muskâs satellite internet service Starlink and the state of North Carolina is bringing satellite internet service to two rural NC counties through a program that could likely have impacts in Avery, Ashe and Watauga counties in the not too distant future.
The program, known as the Satellite Internet Technologies for Student Connectivity Pilot, will provide students in the Swain County and Hyde County school systems access to Space Exploration Technologies Corporationâs, (SpaceX) Starlink internet service.
Funding for the program was made available through the CARES Act and implementation of the technology will be made possible through the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) and the Friday Institute at NC State University, among other state organizations. ....

ACS teachers and staff receive Moderna vaccine

NEWLAND â The Avery County vaccination effort continues to sweep the stateâs eligible populations, with those who are 65 and older, public school employees and now daycare workers currently eligible for the vaccine.
First doses of the Moderna vaccines are available for the aforementioned group at the Avery County Agricultural Extension at 661 Vale Road above Ingles in Newland on Friday, March 5. Those would like to receive the vaccine must make an appointment by calling the Avery County vaccine call center at (828) 733-8273. The call center is available daily from 9 to 11 a.m. Patients must bring their insurance card if they have one and wear appropriate clothing for ease of access to the upper arm.
