Rehder’s bipartisan needle exchange legislation heads to Missouri House committee
Bipartisan legislation creating a hypodermic needle exchange program will be heard by a Missouri House committee Tuesday afternoon in Jefferson City.

State Sen. Holly Rehder (R-Scott City), who has sponsored the bill for several years, will testify before the Missouri House Emerging Issues Committee. Her two-page Senate Bill 64 has already received final approval from the Missouri Senate.
Senator Rehder tells Missourinet that the needle exchange program would help prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis. She has said that if addicts have access to clean needles, it would reduce the transmission of those diseases. ....

One Man Fights For Missourians With Felonies To Regain Voting Rights When Released

Ronnie Amiyn stands outside Gambrinus Hall in the Marine Villa neighborhood, where he would vote Tuesday if he could cast his ballot. In Missouri, formerly incarcerated people cannot vote until they complete their court ordered probation or parole term. Amiyn is working with the St. Louis chapter of EX-incarcerated People Organizing to try to persuade Missouri lawmakers to immediately restore the voting rights of people who leave prison.
There are more than 3,400 St. Louisans who cannot vote Tuesday in the city’s mayoral election because they have not yet completed their probation or parole term. Missouri activists and lawmakers are pushing to restore voting rights more quickly to formerly incarcerated people so they can participate in local and state elections. ....

Sitting outside in masked, pandemic style, I recently asked some of my sisters involved in criminal justice ministry to share reflections on their experience.
All had backgrounds in education and administration before they had chosen to work with those transitioning from prison. Accompaniment of those who had been incarcerated was the context of our sharing.
In our faith sharing, we focused more on how this ministry called them to change, rather than on what they had done. This perspective became the focus of our conversation. ....
