GLOVERSVILLE – When one fifth-grade teacher in the Gloversville Enlarged School District saw the scores of third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students on their English Language Arts exams from 2019,  she decided she wanted to think more broadly about improving literacy rates and the preparedness of district children. 
Those pre-COVID scores showed that proficiency on the exam, which measures reading and writing skills, was reached by 36% of third-graders, 34% of fourth-graders, and 22% of fifth-graders, according to data from the state Department of Education.  ....

GLOVERSVILLE – For retired church school teacher Sally Kwak, the well-publicized shooting injury to Northville native Samuel Poulin in New York City on Sunday convinced her of the need to fight against gun violence.
Kwak spoke at a meeting of concerned city residents organized by the North Main United Methodist Church Wednesday evening. The meeting was held at the church and promoted on the city of Gloversville Facebook page under the title, “Gun Violence: It’s here. It’s been here. It’s time to talk.”
“My son played soccer with Sam,” Kwak said. “I would like to say this is the first time we have been touched by [gun violence] as a family, but that would not be true. We have been touched by suicide, both family and friends, by guns. We are not alone.” ....

Arlene Superko, 96, of Gloversville, NY, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021. She was born in Nanticoke, PA, to parents Rose (Burkett) and Edward Superko. Arlene was predeceased by her sister, Alma Pearce; brothers, Alfred, Robert and Alexander; and lifelong friend, Ruth Hawkins. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
After graduation from Bloomsburg State College. Arlene obtained graduate degrees from Columbia University and Syracuse University. During her career she taught in Auburn, NY and was a guidance counselor at Bethlehem High School in Delmar, NY and Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District in Parish, NY, retiring in August 2000 after 55 years in education. ....
