EASTPORT, NY A tireless advocate for the environment known for her bright light, infectious smile, and complete dedication to civic pursuits died in December, leaving behind a rich legacy and shoes almost impossible to fill, all who loved her agree.
Andrew Spilka, who lived in Eastport, died at 72 of cancer, leaving scores stunned and irrevocably saddened. And now, those she stood alongside in the battle to save the natural environment and the small towns that mean home to so many are giving back creating a park in her honor. ....

Today is Deadline for Comments on South Fork Wind Farm Environmental Report

The federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), which recently finished its draft environmental review of the South Fork Wind Farm, gave the public a chance to weigh in on the document at three virtual public hearings in mid-February, and is accepting further written public comment through midnight tonight.
While much of the focus on the wind farm locally over the past several years has been the local and New York State Public Service Commission review of the wind farm’s export cable, currently slated to come ashore at Beach Lane in Wainscott en route to a substation in East Hampton, the BOEM review focuses on the wind farm itself, 15 turbines slated to be placed in federal waters about 30 miles off the coast of Montauk. ....

Keeping a long-running tradition alive, new state Sen. Anthony Palumbo is continuing his predecessor’s practice of conducting regular environmental roundtables.
On Friday, Mr. Palumbo assembled representatives from more than a dozen area environmental organizations on Zoom to hear their concerns and priorities. He began the virtual meeting by thanking recently retired state Sen. Kenneth LaValle, who served in the Legislature for 44 years. Mr. Palumbo won that seat in November after serving in the Assembly.
At the start of the virtual meeting, Mr. LaValle, who conducted similar roundtables for years, said, “Some of the most beautiful areas in this state and maybe the world are on the East End. I am glad to see Sen. Palumbo continuing this practice.” ....
