Public Health to hold 3-day back-to-school immunization clinic


The Department of Public Health and Social Services will hold a three-day back-to-school walk-up immunization clinic in recognition of National Immunization Awareness Month.
The clinic is for students ages 4 to 18 who are uninsured, or covered under Medicaid or the Medically Indigent Program, according to a news release.
It will be held at the University of Guam Calvo Field House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., or while supplies last, July 29-31.
Parents and participants must provide updated shot records to participate, the release stated. The varicella vaccine (also known as chickenpox vaccine), PPD skin tests (tuberculosis test) and physical exams won’t be offered. Students with private health care insurance coverage aren’t eligible to participate. ....

Vaccine rates lowest among CHamorus, regional migrants

Although the island’s overall vaccination rate is high, it’s very low among two ethnic groups CHamorus and people from the Federated States of Micronesia  said Dr. Hoa Nguyen, chairman of the governor’s Physicians Advisory Group.
The island is nearing the governor’s goal of fully vaccinating 80% of adults by July 21, with more than 76% vaccinated.
But Nguyen said the vaccination rate for CHamorus is only about 20%, and the vaccination rate for the island’s FSM community is “somewhere in the teens.”
“Everyone is scratching their head right now on how to approach the (CHamoru) population,” Nguyen said. ....
