New Delhi: Internet major Google has slashed the service fee developers have to pay on in-app purchases of digital goods on its Play Store from 30 per cent to 15 per cent, joining rival Apple, on the first $1 million they earn as revenue each year. However, Indian startups are of the view that Google’s latest measure doesn’t provide any respite to developers. ....

The reduced commission will now be effective from July this year, the US technology giant said in a blog post on Tuesday. Developers in India will, however, have time till the end of March 2022 to integrate Google Play Store billing into their Android apps. Most app developers currently prefer routing in-app purchases through cheaper payment gateways.
“With this change, 99% of developers globally that sell digital goods and services with Play will see a 50% reduction in fees,” said Sameer Samat, vice president, Android & Google Play. “These are funds that can help developers scale up at a critical phase of their growth by hiring more engineers, adding to their marketing staff, increasing server capacity, and more.” ....
