PETALING JAYA: The government must give its assurance that undocumented migrant workers and refugees going for their Covid-19 vaccinations will not be detained by the authorities, several groups have said.
Migrants rights groups and the Indonesian Embassy sought a guarantee from the authorities that undocumented migrants would not be arrested from Aug 1, with those in the Klang Valley allowed to walk in to any Covid-19 vaccination centre to get their jabs.
They said the migrants were willing to be vaccinated but were afraid of being apprehended by the authorities. ....

PETALING JAYA: It is important for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) be granted access to all detention centres in determining asylum-seekers and refugees, said activists.
In making the call, Amnesty International Malaysia (AIM) and Asylum Access Malaysia (AAM) said this will prevent individuals from being deported.
They were referring to 1,086 individuals sent back to their homeland on Myanmar navy ships on Tuesday.
The individuals were part of the 1,200 people which AIM and AAM had filed a joint judicial review on Tuesday.
“We know people on the (deported) list are under asylum,” AIM executive director Katrina Jorene Maliamauv said in a virtual news conference yesterday. ....

The migrants were deported on three Myanmar navy ships despite a court order halting the repatriation
Malaysia on Tuesday deported more than 1,000 Myanmar detainees back to their strife-torn homeland just weeks after a coup, despite a court order halting the repatriation and a storm of criticism.
The migrants, whom activists say include vulnerable asylum seekers, departed on three Myanmar navy ships from a Malaysian military base after arriving on packed trucks and buses under police escort.
The United States, the United Nations and rights groups had criticised the plan, while hours before the deportation a Kuala Lumpur court ordered it be temporarily halted to allow a legal challenge. ....
