Cut on rice tariff 'ill-timed' — farmers – Manila Bulletin

Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) National Manager Raul Montemayor is questioning the basis for the DA’s petition, given that DA Secretary William Dar had repeatedly said the country will have enough local rice production following a record harvest in 2020 despite the series of typhoons and calamities.

(MB file, Keith Bacongco)
“This sudden proposal of the DA is totally unjustified. It is a stab in the back of our rice farmers, who are still reeling from the drastic fall in farmgate prices caused by excessive imports in the last two years following the enactment of the Rice Tariffication Law.  Why encourage more and cheaper imports now when local supply is more than enough, and prices are very stable?” Montemayor further said. ....

How to help coco farmers and why selling UCPB is good

Atty. Joey Lina
I would like to share the insights of former Agriculture Secretary Leonardo Montemayor, chairman of the Federation of Free Farmers, about the predicament of the nation’s coconut farmers who remain poor despite the Coco Levy Fund worth billions of pesos that’s supposed to help them.
In an article titled “Can UCPB, Land Bank and Coco Levy Fund meet credit needs of Coconut Farmers?” which Montemayor co-wrote with Edgardo C. Amistad, former president of the UCPB-CIIF Finance and Development Corporation, answers can be found to questions troubling the coconut industry.
Foremost among them are: How come coco farmers hardly benefitted from the fund established for them four decades ago? What ought to be done now to improve their plight and boost the coconut industry? ....

Vietnam's move to import rice to push prices of the staple in PH

Published January 9, 2021, 6:00 AM
The latest move of Vietnam – the Philippines’ top source for cheaper, imported rice – to import rice too may push rice prices higher on the local front, sources said.
Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Ariel Cayanan said the unprecedented decision of Vietnam, one of the world’s top rice exporters, to import rice from India will “not only have implication in the Philippines but also the entire world market”.
(MB file, Mark BAlmores)
“90 percent of our imported rice comes from Vietnam [so definitely] the price [of the staple] will increase,” Cayanan said in a virtual press briefing.
“Aside from the Philippines, a lot of other countries also buy from Vietnam,” he added.   ....

PH agri sector remains vulnerable

Agriculture Secretary William Dar (MANILA BULLETIN)
The Philippines’ agriculture sector has survived a volcano eruption that blanketed tons of farm yield with ashes and sustained production within three quarters into the pandemic, but it only took three typhoons to expose its vulnerability.
And Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) National Manager Raul Montemayor has one piece of advice to the government, which is to focus on helping farmers and fishermen recover.
“We need to help the farmers first,” Montemayor said in a text exchange, referring to the damage that the recent typhoons, especially Rolly and Ulysses, caused in the lives of poor agriculture stakeholders. ....
