Drivers clash with police in Dover as lorries still stuck despite eased travel ban

Lorry drivers and police have clashed in Kent as drivers stuck at the border have been warned it could take days to clear the backlog.
Others honked their horns and shouted we want to go home in protest at being stuck at the border, despite the border with France reopening after a mass Covid testing agreement was reached between the two sides.
More than 6,000 HGVs are being held in the county, with drivers being tested for Covid-19 before they are allowed into France.
Kent Council leader Roger Gough said the first 20 trucks have now entered the Eurotunnel to make the crossing. ....

Drivers clash with police in Dover as lorries are further delayed by travel ban


France imposed the travel ban in response to fears about the spread of the more infectious coronavirus strain, which is spreading in the UK.
Hauliers must be able to show proof of a negative test carried out within the past 72 hours in order to be able to cross into France.
The Manston Airfield site has become the main testing centre for hauliers, with drivers required to self-administer the tests in their cabs under supervision.

The French Government will also carry out sample testing on incoming freight to the UK, the RHA said. ....

Scottish food producers with goods stuck in Kent are set for a black Christmas , an industry chief has said.
Thousands of lorries are stranded at the Channel after France banned entry when a new, more infectious strain of coronavirus was found in the UK.
A deal has been struck with the French government to allow freight through, with drivers being tested before crossing.
However, Food and Drink Federation Scotland (FDFS) chief executive David Thomson said clearing the backlog will take days, with some produce - seafood in particular - being ruined by the wait.
He told the BBC: For those people who export fresh and perishable goods, particularly seafood and salmon in Scotland, it s been an absolutely disastrous few days and it will lead to a black Christmas for those businesses. ....

In a scenario that has been called “a mirror image of the Berlin airlift” during the Cold War, Germany has flown 80 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables from Frankfurt to Yorkshire.
A Lufthansa Boeing 777 cargo plane from the airline’s hub touched down on Wednesday afternoon at Doncaster-Sheffield airport.
On board was lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli and citrus fruit destined for Aldi, the Co-op, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
An airline spokesperson said the aim was “to help restock sparse UK supermarket shelves just in time for Christmas”. ....
