Rice cereal is often one of the first foods introduced to babies. What many parents don t know is that the Food and Drug Administration allows 10 times as much arsenic in rice cereal as in other products. Phong Duong/Unsplash

When parents first serve solid foods to their babies, they often turn to infant rice cereal. The iron-fortified mix is nutritious and relatively easy to feed babies unaccustomed to spoons or strong flavors.
But the Food and Drug Administration allows 10 times as much arsenic in this favored first food as it does in other products, like bottled water and apple juice despite the fact that, as a neurotoxin, arsenic can have an outsize impact on babies, whose brains are still developing. ....

Coastal News Today | LA - New paper shows benefits of Louisiana coastal restoration to soil carbon sequestration

This reduction in capacity could significantly alter the global carbon budget, given that Louisiana s marsh soils account for between 5 and 21 percent of the global soil carbon storage in tidally influenced wetlands, said Melissa Baustian, lead author and coastal ecologist at The Water Institute of the Gulf.
The article, Long-term carbon sinks in marsh soils of coastal Louisiana are at risk to wetland loss examined 24 south Louisiana sites located within four marsh habitats defined by the amount of saltwater influence fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline. Carbon sink is a reservoir that stores more carbon than it releases.
By working with colleagues from U.S. Geological Survey, Vernadero Group, Abt Associates, and Tulane University the team used marsh habitat maps from 1949 to 2013, deep soil cores, soil carbon accumulation rates, and maps of future marsh area, to confirm the importance of considering historical habitats when evaluating a coastal areas long-term ....

Womble Bond Dickinson aims to reduce square footage for U.S. offices by up 50% as lawyers and staff members spend more time working from home.
Law.com spoke with Womble’s United States CEO Betty Temple about the law firm’s plans. Womble will cut space as leases for its 18 U.S offices come up for renewal, although not all of the offices will cut space by half.
Womble will need less office space because of a smaller head count and flexible work arrangements that allow staff members and lawyers to work from home. Head count has shrunk partly because of equity partner retirements and partly because of a reduction in lawyers working at its ancillary services arm. ....
