Varsity Workers Begin Three-day Protests over IPPIS, Allowances

Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja, Adibe Emenyonu in Benin City, Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano, Hammed Shittu in Ilorin and Ibrahim Oyewale in Lokoja
University workers under the auspices of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Educational and Associated Institutions and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) yesterday protested nationwide to press the federal government to address their grievances.
The workers said they were protesting against maltreatment and the injustice meted out on them by the federal government.
Among the grievances listed by the unions are irregularities in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), disbursement of the earned allowances and non-payment of arrears of minimum wage, non-payment of arrears of pension and gratuities. ....

Non-aca- demic staff in the nation’s universities yesterday asked the Federal Government to sack Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu, and his Labour and Employment counterpart, Chris Ngige, for supporting the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, who they alleged of scheming to cheat them in the disbursement of the N40 billion released by the Federal Government as Earned Allowances.
They also accused the ministers of failing to address issues revolving around the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS.
These were part of the demands of the non-academic staff, operating under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, as they embarked on a 3-day warning protest at campuses nationwide. ....

The non-academic members of staff of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), on Tuesday, joined a nationwide three-day protest to draw the Federal Government attention to their unpaid earned allowances and other demands.
The workers- under the aegis of Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-academic Staff Union (NASU) also lamented the irregularities in their salaries by the government Integrated Personnel and Payroll System (IPPS).
The workers claimed that for almost 10 months running, the IPPS had not remitted monies collected in form of dues and third party deductions to the unions. ....
