On the night of Sunday, October 8, Northern California Wine Country was hit with a dangerous “perfect storm” of atmospheric conditions combining: warm temperatures, extremely low humidity, bone-dry fields and forests, and very strong winds. Beginning at 9:52 pm, 17 wildfires sprung up throughout the wine country counties of Napa, Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino counties. These were considered wildland urban interface fires, meaning forest fires within close proximity to human habitation and businesses. And these fires were big and fast-moving, among the worst in California’s history. The result was a tragic toll on some communities, notably in Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. Some people lost their lives, many were evacuated, and some people are still displaced. ....

More rain, less snow could mean more droughts

California may be more at risk of frequent and severe droughts now than in the past, according to Safeeq Khan, a University of California Cooperative Extension specialist.
More water could be stored below our feet to help even out the cycles of drought and floods, specialist says.

California has faced many droughts in the past, and we have always been able to manage them to some extent.
However, with climate change creating a new hydrologic regime with more precipitation falling as rain than snow and higher evaporative demand, the state may be more at risk for drought now than in years past, according to Safeeq Khan, Cooperative Extension Specialist in Water and Watershed Sciences at the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resource. ....

Spurs have been around for a bit with early examples used by the Roman Legions of Julius Caesar and more contemporary versions used by cowboys throughout the West.
There’s another type of spur found in the West, this one located in almond orchards where more than 80% of the almond crop is carried on those short, compact vegetative shoots called spurs. Each season a portion of that spur population, borne on the prior season’s wood, is responsible for fruit production. ....

UC Davis Cooperative Extension Specialist Confirmed as 2021 ASEV ...

DAVIS, Calif., March 5, 2021.Dr. Anita Oberholster, Associate Specialist in Cooperative Extension in Enology for Agricultural Natural Resources (ANR), based at University of California, Davis, has been confirmed by the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) as the recipient of the 2021 ASEV Extension Distinction Award. Dr. Oberholster will present “The Challenges of Modern Extension Programs” at the 72nd ASEV National Conference, held virtually on June 21-24, 2021. 
Dr. Oberholster completed her doctorate in wine sciences at the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 2008 and worked at the Department of Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University until 2011, when she became a Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. In her current position, she focuses on continued education for the grape and wine industry while her research program concentrates on current issues in the grape ....
