Ute Pass Historical Society collaborates with partners on dude-ranch documentary

WOODLAND PARK • As memories fade and history recedes into 21st-century concerns, a documentary by the Ute Pass Historical Society tells the story of the impact of area dude ranches, economically, socially and culturally. The film is a collaboration of the society, the Teller County Film Commission, Animas Productions and RedJaxx Media.
The documentary recalls the romance of the Old West that reverberated across America. “People wanted to pretend that they were back in the era of cowboys, to experience that kind of life,” said Donna Finicle, speaking in the theatrical trailer of “The Story of Us/ Dude Ranches above the Clouds.” ....

Woodland Park School Board announces new superintendent

WOODLAND PARK • The Woodland Park RE-2 School District Board of Education has hired Dr. Mathew Neal as its new superintendent.
The decision, made at the board s March 10 meeting, followed months of combing through applications and conducting interviews to find a successor for Steve Woolf, who agreed to a contract termination at the end of November after an incident involving his arrest for driving under the influence in August.
After announcing Neal’s finalist status, the board went into an executive session to discuss contract negotiations.
Neal currently serves as superintendent of the American Creativity Academy in Hawalli, Kuwait.
A native of Fort Collins, Neal earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Change from the University of Southern California, a master s from Colorado State University, and a bachelor s degree from Mississippi College. ....

Teller County Commissioners pass resolution to defy state COVID restrictions

Citing the one-year anniversary of the emergency COVID-19 lockdown orders by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, the Teller County Board of County Commissioners have asked to be relieved of state mandates.
“We are in recovery, not in an emergency,” said Commission Vice Chairman Dan Williams, via email, after a special meeting that was called last week to pass the resolution.
“After a year, we are now seeing real impact from the continued restrictions, such as a 100% increase in our suicide rate and a dramatic rise in domestic violence and child abuse. This resolution is a strong statement of our intent to state government that it is time to return to normalcy. We need to restore our government and put control where it belongs . at the local level . we got this.” ....

'Leave the backcountry alone!': Colorado ski area expansion continues to meet opposition

Debate continues to rage around a proposed expansion on Aspen Mountain.
The U.S. Forest Service in 2019 greenlit the proposal by Aspen Skiing Co., which has long sought development on the mountain s east side above 10,000 feet in an area known as Pandora s. The idea is to add 153 acres of lift-served terrain, reached via a new high-speed quad chair.
Company executives have said the plan would grant intermediate and expert types a tree-skiing experience hard to come by on Aspen Mountain, one of four hubs making up Aspen Snowmass. They ve also said the project would be the ski area s first sizable expansion in 40 years, and they ve compared the potential legacy of Pandora s to the legendary Highland Bowl and Hanging Valley Wall at neighboring mountains. ....
