CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Chesapeake Fire Department responded to a commercial fire in the 2100 block of Chesapeake Avenue Monday night.
Firefighters responded to the home in the Portlock section of the city at 8:53 p.m. for a report of a possible commercial structure fire. Ladder 2 and Engine 2 arrived on scene six minutes later to smoke showing from the roof of the building, which the fire department did not name.
Crews from Stations 2, 3, 4, 10 and Norfolk Engine 8 entered the building to attack the fire and look for anyone who may have been inside. ....

Last week, Charlotte leaders announced an effort to wipe out homelessness and expand affordable housing within five years. It s not the first time Charlotte has tried this, but some think this has a better chance at succeeding.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A small homeless encampment on NCDOT property is being asked to leave.
On Wednesday, Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris addressed the matter saying this was not done because of a directive or abatement order.
Harris says it is the responsibility of the property owner to make sure people leave the area if they can no longer stay there. ....

I frequently travel up to Paris, and I read The Paris News article, “Lamar County Commissioners continue to chase courthouse leaks.” (April 15)
The roof leakage problem has been an ongoing battle for two decades, ever since the courthouse renovation at that time. Just less than two months ago, I was dealing with my own roof leaks (which were frustrating, wearisome, as well as costly). Many roofers are good roofers, but only a few have a keen eye for leaks, especially when it comes to roofs which have little or no slope, or “no pitch.”
It is imperative that a roof have at least some slope in order to drain water properly. If flat roofs are the cause, they cannot handle the heavy snow-load weight, such as occurred with this past February’s recent fluke Arctic cold snap with incredible amounts of snow and ice. A rubber-type sealant is almost critical to apply to the roof of the courthouse. ....
