Sharples School pupils soak in the carnival atmosphere

Pupils at Sharples High School soaked up a carnival atmosphere as they had fun in the sun.
Attractions included funfair rides, a chocolate fountain, free ice creams and for some reason sponge the teacher proved popular with the pupils.
The special treat was laid on for all pupils, who because of the pandemic have missed out on so much.
Every year group had a chance to enjoy the fete in the safety of their bubbles.
Caroline Molyneux, deputy headteacher, said: “It was a well-deserved treat for the pupils in what has been a difficult year.
“They haven’t been able to go on school trips as they normally would so we wanted to put something special on for them as they have worked hard when they have been at home during lockdown.” ....

MERRY JANET FLANNERY WALLEN SMITH

MERRY JANET FLANNERY WALLEN SMITH The world got a little dimmer, lost a little bit of its laughter and wept in sorrow on February 9, 2021, as we said goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend Merry Janet “Jan” Flannery Wallen Smith. She was our bright star, and we will forever miss the warmth that she comforted us with every day. We are so blessed to be able to carry the many memories we were fortunate enough to make with her throughout her lifetime. To know her was to love her, and love her we sure did. Merry was born at Sharples, W.Va., to Ernest “Ox” and Edith Flannery. Merry grew up and lived her whole life on Coal Valley Road in Clothier, W.Va. She often and lovingly referred to herself as “one of the alley kids.” She was a proud graduate of Sharples High School. She was retired from the Logan County Board of Education, where she spent the majority of her time as a Teacher’s Aide at East Chapmanville grade school. Merry was preceded in death ....

Akers honored at his last commission meeting

LOGAN — The Logan County Commission presented a proclamation honoring outgoing commissioner Willie Akers during his final regular session Thursday, Dec. 17.
A graduate of the former Mullens High School in Wyoming County, Akers came to Logan County around 1961 after playing for the West Virginia University men’s basketball team from 1957 through 1960. He played alongside basketball legend Jerry West, advancing the team to a No. 1 ranking in the 1958 season.
During his 25 years as a basketball coach at Logan High School, he led the Wildcats boys basketball team to four AAA state championship titles — 1964, 1977, 1978 and 1983. He also had a few state runners-up titles under his belt, including 1963 and 1979. ....
