Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center's response to COVID-19 helps keep NCSU a safer place

by Mick Kulikowski March 17, 2021 .
Editor’s note: The N.C. Biotech Center and WRAL TechWire announced recently the launch of the Bio Jobs Hub, a project designed to match workers and employers in the growing NC life science community. Each Wednesday TechWire plans to feature a story about what’s happening in life science careers.
This week’s feature highlights the relationship between the NC State Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center, or BTEC, and Novozymes. BTEC continues to produce hand sanitizer for NC State and also for the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh. Since starting last May, BTEC has produced more than 2,400 gallons of hand sanitizer. It was a new experience for BTEC to obtain the necessary alcohol permits and FDA approval to produce hand sanitizer. The university partnered with Novozymes, the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science, which provided funding ....

New catalyst makes styrene manufacturing cheaper, greener

 E-Mail
Chemical engineering researchers have developed a new catalyst that significantly increases yield in styrene manufacturing, while simultaneously reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Styrene is a synthetic chemical that is used to make a variety of plastics, resins and other materials, says Fanxing Li, corresponding author of the work and Alcoa Professor of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University. Because it is in such widespread use, we are pleased that we could develop a technology that is cost effective and will reduce the environmental impact of styrene manufacturing. Industry estimates predict that manufacturers will be producing more than 33 million tons of styrene each year by 2023. ....
