County supervisors agree on yearly budget, hear solar tax options

CHATHAM, Va. â The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Finance Committee yesterday afternoon approved advertisement of the county budget for the fiscal year 2021-22. The board also heard updates on solar farm taxation options and 2022 property reassessment.
County Administrator David Smitherman presented a budget of over $211 million for FY 2021-22, of which $71.5 million comprises the general fund. The remainder is state and federal funds, amalgamating to an annual county budget totaling $26 million more than last year.
The budget proposal isnât perfect, but, It s our attempt to get us through one more year, Smitherman said.
Four years ago, the board engendered a four-year live within our means plan, Smitherman said. The plan helped the county bounce back from a historic low point in 2018, when county administrators were worried if they d be able to pay their own employees. Debt has diminished ever since. ....

Kentuck's bringing back its Festival; Oct. 2021 will be the 50th

Don’t call it a comeback; they’ve been here 50 years: The Kentuck Festival of the Arts will be back live for 2021.
Among the many celebrations, events and adventures swept away by the pandemic calamity of 2020, cancellation of last October s festival dimmed one of the most vibrant, beloved traditions in west Alabama.
“The festival to me is like a revival,” said Amy Echols, Kentuck’s executive director, “because I get such a nurturing and empowering feeling….It’s energizing to be around all that creativity, and to be around all those artists.”
An amalgam of traditional, visionary and contemporary art, craft, music and other creative endeavors, the Kentuck Festival is a have-to-be-lived-in crazy quilt, wound with fiber, steel, wood, canvas and color, bound by customs, contraptions and folklore, and underpinned by widespread roots grasping the inventive, innovative, wild and weird at heart since its origins in a 1971 downtown Northport street fair. ....

Power crews continue their work Monday

DANVILLE, Va. -Danville Utility crews continue to work to restore power to those who lost service during a weekend ice storm.
More than 20,000 customers were without power at the height of the outage. That number was down to about 2,500 by Saturday night.
Damage is widespread and extensive, and more trees fell Sunday, causing additional problems. The number of power outages was down to about 2,100 Monday morning. Outages that affect the largest number of people are being fixed first, followed by individual interruptions. Crews are working staggered, 16-hour shifts to get the job done.
Damage from fallen trees is extensive in the Kentuck area and crews were still working to restore service at that substation Sunday. ....
