As spring comes to coastal Maine, it brings with it the return of alewives to Nequasset Lake and the start of the annual Nequasset Alewife Count. The first alewives were seen entering Nequasset Lake on April 29 this year. Volunteers are needed from now through early June to count the fish that successfully make it over the fish ladder. Counting is a fun activity for both children and adults, and no prior experience in necessary. Kennebec Estuary Land Trust is looking for volunteers to count fish that successfully make it over the fish ladder at Nequasset Lake in Woolwich through early June.
Counting can be done by children and adults, and no prior experience is necessary.
Each fish counter signs up for a two-hour block and counts fish for two 10-minute periods in that block. Counting takes place between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.
Alewives a type of herring are an important part of the food chain in the Gulf of Maine, according to the land trust. They feed fish like cod and striped bass, and birds of prey depend on the alewife migration for a source of spring food. They are a valued bait fish for Maine’s lobster industry. ....

The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) invites families with children aged 5-12 to join Penny Jessop for a morning of birding at Bonyun Preserve May 15. Together we will investigate our feathered friends of Westport Island, including those that live in the forest, soar through the sky, and feed along the shore. Binoculars and field guides will be made available to attendees, but you are encouraged to bring your own!
Penny Jessop, Maine Master Naturalist Volunteer, is a retired school teacher re-wired as a nature educator. Her experience serving as a nature guide at Thorncrag Sanctuary in Lewiston, equips Penny with vast birding expertise to lead us in our exploration. ....

Maine Women’s Giving Tree has announced it has donated $60,000 to 10 nonprofits in the Midcoast. “This is by far the largest amount we have awarded in our 10-year history of grant making,” said Jane Cabot of Harpswell, president of the nonprofit. “In a giving circle, members pool their dollars and together decide how to distribute those dollars, resulting in a greater impact in our communities than we could as individual donors.”
Recipients include:
ArtVan, a mobile art therapy program for neighborhoods with little or no access to after-school or summer programs, particularly during the COVID pandemic. Its $5,500 grant will help sustain programs for youngsters at Perryman Village and for asylum-seeking families. ....

The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust invites families with children aged 5-12 to join Penny Jessop for a morning of birding at Bonyun Preserve on Westport Island. Maine Master Naturalist Volunteer Jessop, is a retired school teacher whose experience includes serving as a nature guide at Thorncrag Sanctuary in Lewiston.
This event is free and open to public thanks to The Merrymeeting Bay Trust.
