Cairo firefighter identified as victim of crash | News, Sports, Jobs

Authorities Tuesday released the name of the person killed in an accident Monday on U.S. 50 east of Parkersburg.
Chad D. Kilburn, 60, Cairo, was killed in the accident at Red Hill Road and U.S. 50, Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens said.
Kilburn was driving a 2014 Harley-Davidson three-wheel trike that was in a collision with a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Leonard Flowers, 72, Elizabeth, Stephens said.
Kilburn was driving west on Route 50 and the van, going east, made a left turn into the trike, causing the driver of the trike to be ejected, the sheriff’s department said on Monday. ....

Little Dixie's Susie Givens, who died in weekend fire, mourned

The proud little community of Little Dixie but also folks across Henderson County, Kentucky, the nation and even the world remain in tearful shock following the tragic death of Susie Givens on Saturday morning.
Givens, 67, perished in a fire at her home on Pritchett-Crooks Road just 2½ months after the death of her husband, Dorris Givens, 77, who died from complications of COVID-19 on Dec. 28, 2020.
“As of right now, the cause of the fire was an explosion, but the cause of the explosion is under investigation,” Bryan Coghill, chief of Corydon Civil Defense Fire & Rescue, said Monday afternoon.
She is survived by daughters Randa Givens Gary and Dawn Givens Caton and their families. ....

Veterans Memorial in Cairo being repaired, relocated after flooding caused damage | News, Sports, Jobs

CAIRO After sustaining damage from recent flooding, the Veterans Memorial in Cairo is being repaired and will be moved to a safer location.
Since 2017, the memorial needed work done but with the damage to the retaining wall Feb. 28, that project became more of a necessity.
The day after the damage, former Cairo resident Tim Cantwell of TC Towing and Repair came on the scene to assess the situation, according to a release from D.J. Allen, Ritchie County Veterans Memorial coordinator. ....

Heavy rainfall takes toll on Cairo veterans memorial | News, Sports, Jobs

CAIRO The Cairo veterans memorial was damaged Sunday following heavy rainfall this weekend.
At 1:45 p.m. Sunday, the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call involving a possible structure collapse, according to Cairo Fire Chief Zach Foster.
“When we got there we found the back retaining wall of the memorial had collapsed into the lot behind it. The block holding the wall up was completely gone and part of the memorial had started to fall in as well,” he said.
The damage was not severe – Foster said he believes it is fixable but thinks it might have to be moved from its location on Railroad Street downtown. ....
