17 Michigan school districts receive $509k in grants from No Kid Hungry

WASHINGTON — Seventeen Michigan school districts received grants from No Kid Hungry as part of the organization’s goal to ensure the state’s children remain nourished and healthy, according to a news release Wednesday.
The grants were made in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education.
“School meals are available to students across Michigan no matter if they are learning remotely or participating in a hybrid model,” said Allison Dela Cuesta, field manager for the No Kid Hungry campaign. “These grants will help ensure students in Michigan continue to get the nutrition they need to learn during this difficult time.” ....

MCE delivers holiday meals, discusses first semester


The Mason County Eastern Board of Education heard about the special project at its meeting Monday evening.
It started when Mason County Family Link provided turkeys and fixings for Thanksgiving and it snowballed from there.
“That donation jump-started it,” said Superintendent Paul Shoup.
It began with about 20 turkeys, but the school added more families to the list, which meant more birds. So it became 25, then 30.
K-12 Principal Mark Forner said they approached the student council to do something similar for Christmas.
“It was so well received, we decided to do it again. The community and staff support, plus donations from the (Community Foundation of Mason County) meant we had no limit to the number of meals we could provide,” Shoup said. “The school really wrapped around it.” ....

MCC board to pick new trustee, discuss recent COVID-19 cases Monday


SCOTTVILLE — Four candidates are vying for an open spot on the Mason County Central Board of Education, and a new trustee will be selected Monday.
Oscar Davila, Steven Griswold, Tom McLouth and Rebecca Frederick have each submitted letters of interest to fill the vacancy left by long-time trustee Jeff Barnett on Nov. 16.
The board will hear from each of them during an interview session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. prior to the start of the regular meeting at 7. Both the interviews and the regular meeting will be held via the Google Meet video-conferencing, due to the ongoing pandemic.
