Brunswick is taking a leap toward renewable energy after approving a 20-year offsite solar contract with ReVision Energy.
The agreement targets a 66% commitment of the combined municipal and school electric expenses saving the town an estimated $1.8 million over the 20-year period. Brunswick’s projected annual electric expense for both municipal and school buildings is $558,291, not including streetlights.
Combining the school and town, the contracts translate to a commitment of about 3 million kilowatt hours per year generated through solar. For comparison, the average American home in 2019 used just over 10,600 kilowatt hours per year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. ....

As of Thursday, Brunswick High School has now reported four active cases of COVID-19, up one from when the outbreak was first announced by Superintendent Phil Potenziano in a letter on April 19.
The Maine Center for Disease Control defines an outbreak as three or more cases of COVID-19 within a 14-day period that are epidemiologically linked.
“Please monitor yourself/your student for signs and symptoms,” Potenziano wrote. “A school representative has contacted all close contacts.”
According to a reopening update on April 9, all Brunswick schools will be transitioning from two days to four days per week of in-person learning beginning on April 26 until the end of the school year. ....

I am incredibly privileged to work with elementary school children at Kate Furbish Elementary School. Just prior to February break, Brunswick School Department employees received a $10 gift certificate from Wild Oats Bakery that said, “Thank you for being our Community Heroes. Love, the Wild Oats Team.” There are 450 BSD employees.
I’ve known the owners, Becky and David Shepherd, for years; our children went through the Brunswick school system together. Becky has served on the Brunswick School Board and has continued to be a strong advocate for our schools. I’m a volunteer for nonprofits, and whenever I have asked Becky for assistance, she has always been glad to contribute, both financially and with her time. ....
