MANSFIELD - The rural graveyards Eric Boll would pass during his boyhood helped earn him a journalism award this spring after the Ohio University student reported on their upkeep.
It definitely made me more confident in my reporting, the sophomore from Lexington said after placing among the top 20 in the Multimedia Innovative Storytelling category of the Hearst Journalism Awards.
His article, The Forgotten Cemeteries of Richland County, was published Nov. 24, 2020, by WOUB Public Media, which touts itself as being  an experiential-learning unit of Ohio University s Scripps College of Communication.

Journalist killed in Kansas City a Springfield native, Mizzou graduate

A journalist who died last week in Kansas City was a Springfield native who graduated from Central High School.
Aviva Okeson-Haberman, 24, died after she was hit by a stray bullet inside her Kansas City apartment complex, according to an article from public radio station KCUR where Okeson-Haberman worked.
KCUR says Okeson-Haberman was set to begin a new job covering social issues and criminal justice for the Kansas News Service. She had previously reported on Missouri government for the radio station.
Aviva was brilliant,  KCUR news director Lisa Rodriguez said in the article. Even as an intern, her approach to storytelling and her ability to hold those in power accountable paralleled many a veteran reporter. She was quiet, which made it all the more satisfying to hear her challenge politicians and hold her ground, even when people in positions of great power tried to belittle her. ....
