Former Lake County Coroner Shannon Lee Kent and his wife, Staci Dawn Kent, of Leadville, pleaded not guilty during a hearing at the Summit County Justice Center on Monday, May 17, to charges related to alleged tampering with a deceased human body.
The Kents, both 45 years old, were arrested in February after officers with the Silverthorne Police Department discovered a badly decaying body that had been left in their Silverthorne funeral home for several months. The deceased was later identified by the Summit County Coroner’s Office as 42-year-old Victor Akubuo, who died in a car crash in Park County on July 30, 2020. ....

Records allege Lake County Coroner, wife tried to recover body during investigation

Court documents are providing new insights into the investigation of Lake County Coroner Shannon Lee Kent and his wife, Staci Dawn Kent, who were arrested on charges of attempted tampering with a deceased human body last week.
Earlier this month, authorities discovered a badly deteriorating body that was allegedly left in a coffin for several months at the former Kent-Bailey Funeral Home in Silverthorne. According to court records, the Kents tried to remove the body during the investigation, despite legally being barred from participating in any funerary activities in Colorado.
The body was identified as Victor Akubuo, 42, of southern California, according to Park County Coroner David Kintz Jr. ....

LAKE COUNTY, Colorado Nearly a year before Lake County coroner Shannon Kent was arrested on a charge of tampering with a deceased human body he was admonished by the state after an investigator observed unembalmed, unrefrigerated remains at one of several funeral homes he owned or operated.
Under state law, remains must be embalmed or refrigerated within 24 hours of the date of death, the letter says.
Shannon Kent and his wife Staci were both arrested last week and each faces a charge of tampering with a deceased human body after Silverthorne Police said the decomposing body of a man who died in July 2020 was found at their former funeral home location in Silverthorne, according to the Silverthorne Police Department (SPD). ....

Sunset Mesa families being pulled into Leadville mortuary case as attorneys seek five years of CMU forensic analyses

Local families who handed over purported cremains for analysis at Colorado Mesa University as part of the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home case could see the results of that testing become part of evidence in an unrelated lawsuit.
A letter dated Wednesday informs the families who had ashes tested at the university that CMU has been subpoenaed for five yearsâ worth of its analyses of cremains and the results.
Those reports include the names of decedents and may also include the names of survivors, the letter states. The letter is signed by Jacquie Rich Fredericks, First Assistant Attorney General for Colorado, who is listed as counsel for CMU in the matter. ....
