Kenya: World Press Freedom Day 2021 - attacks against journalists continue

Kenya: World Press Freedom Day 2021 – attacks against journalists continue
Summary
Today, on World Press Freedom Day, Article 19 Eastern Africa, highlights just a few of the cases of attacks against journalists that have occurred since the last World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2020.
On 24 April 2021, police beat and injured nine journalists in Makumi, Mbeere South, Embu County.  The journalists were covering a story regarding the forceful eviction by police officers of families from a contested land, said to belong to Tana and Athi River Development Authority (TARDA). This was the second time police beat journalists covering stories over the same disputed land. On 13 May 2020, police assaulted and arrested three journalists reporting on a demonstration by residents over the demarcation of the land claimed by TARDA.[1] In the two incidents, the arrested journalists were later released without charge. ....

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has challenged media owners to pay journalists, and correspondents well to enhance media standards and integrity.
Speaking on Monday, May 4, 2021, at Nairobi s Serena Hotel during this year s World Press Freedom Day, Muturi said it is only through better remuneration that journalists will execute their duties with integrity.
He said before media houses demand integrity from journalists, they must lead by paying them well to shield them from being easily compromised by their sources.  ....

The fate of a staffer at the electoral agency to continue serving in the board of the media regulator now lies with the Members of the National Assembly.
Tabitha Mutemi.
This after the National Assembly ICT committee chaired by William Kipsang concurred with a petition lodged before them by a city lawyer calling for Ms Tabitha Mutemi s sacking on assertions that she is in two gainful employments.
But already MPs who are expected to debate the report in May are threatening to shoot it down, The Standard has reliably established that a sharp slip has emerged among the committee in protest after nominated MP Geoffrey Osotsi dissented opinion was rejected on grounds that it is unconstitutional. ....

The spat between Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and media has reached a tipping point. The federation locked out a section of journalists from covering last Saturday’s top tier match between champions Gor Mahia and Ulinzi Stars at Nyayo National Stadium.
Ironically, this happened on the day President Uhuru Kenyatta led the country in marking its 57th Jamhuri Day celebrations at the same venue earlier on.
The incident drew widespread condemnation from both local and international journalists’ bodies, led by the International Sports Press Association and Media Council of Kenya (MCK). ....
