Student mask exemptions soar in southern Utah school district

A state mask mandate for schools is still in effect, but in southern Utah a flood of exemptions means about a third of all students in the Kane County School District are able to go mask-free.
Just a couple of weeks ago, maybe a dozen students had exemptions. Now, roughly 475 do out of 1,417 students in the entire district.
A local change announced by the Kane district on April 13 allowed parents to submit exemptions for their children rather than medical professionals and mask-free forms flowed to educators.
“Kane School District currently has received medical mask exemptions for approximately 34% of our students,” said superintendent Ben Dalton, in response to questions from 2News, adding the same is the case “for approximately 30% of our faculty and staff.” ....

Two Utah School Districts Have Dropped Doctor's Note Requirement For Student Mask Exemptions

Utah’s public school students are required to wear masks in schools, unless they have certain medical conditions. Most schools require a doctor’s note documenting the condition, but at least two school districts in the state are now granting exemptions for students without any proof.
State law says
schools “may” require a doctor’s note in order to grant a mask exemption. But that doesn’t mean they have to, according to Tracy Henderson.
Henderson, who lives in Midvale and has a teenage daughter, is providing legal counsel to a group called Utah Parents United. ....
