The University of Oregon will require students and faculty to have the COVID-19 vaccine to attend fall in-person classes.
UO President Michael Schill made the announcement Monday afternoon, making UO the fourth public university in Oregon to create the new requirement.
"Over the past couple of weeks, university leadership engaged in broad discussions with a wide variety of experts and stakeholders, including students, faculty, and staff, to develop our policy on COVID-19 vaccinations," Schill stated in the announcement. "We have concluded that to protect the health and safety of our university community and the communities we serve, the University of Oregon will require students, faculty and staff who will be on campus to be vaccinated prior to the start of the fall 2021 academic term."

Administration upped its salary offer from 9.5% guaranteed salary increases to 11.5% over the next five years, with the opportunity for another 3.5% in merit increases. Although the union was opposed to merit increases, Ken Fincher, vice president of institutional advancement, said that was one area in which the union compromised.

WILSONVILLE, Ore. — After eight days on strike and more than 500 days in negotiations, the union representing faculty at the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) reached a tentative labor agreement with the university. The email to KGW came around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
“We have a contract,” wrote vice president for institutional advancement Ken Fincher.
The five-year contract begins retroactively in 2020 and lasts through June 2025. It still needs to be ratified by union members, OIT’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

Faculty At Oregon Tech Begin Week 2 Of Historic Strike

/
Sean St. Clair, president of Oregon Tech American Association of University Professors (AAUP), is hoping for a settlement with university administration any day but offered no guarantees on Monday, in what is the second week of a historic strike at the university.
The faculty union and university administration say a deal could come "any day now," but the union insists that, until then, the strike will continue.
Negotiations were expected to edge closer to a contract on Monday morning, as the strike of Oregon Tech faculty reaches its second week at the Klamath Falls and Wilsonville campuses. But the faculty union — Oregon Tech American Association of University Professors (AAUP) — said university officials won’t budge on the union's pay proposal and that no deal had been reached by Monday afternoon.

Oregon Tech Strike Ends As Administration, Faculty Reach Tentative Contract Agreement

Classes could resume as soon as Wednesday morning.
UPDATED: Tues., May 4, 1:55 p.m. ... The historic Oregon Tech faculty strike ended early this morning.
After nearly 18 months of negotiations, Oregon Tech and its faculty union have finally settled on a tentative contract.
The union — Oregon Tech - American Association of University Professors — officially reached the agreement with the administration on a contract early Tuesday morning.
In an early morning email, the union celebrated what representatives see as a significant progress toward fair compensation.
Faculty pushed for secure benefits, fair compensation and a sustainable workload. According to the union, the contract calls for benefits to be secured for the duration of the contract and includes the right to bargain over any proposed changes that impact working conditions. The contract also lays out protection for saying no to excess workload assignments.
