CHATHAM  Lots of creatures and vessels now use the April Fool’s Cut to travel between the Atlantic and Nantucket Sound through an ever-widening breach in the barrier beach torn open by a nor’easter back on April 1, 2017.
But it’s most regular visitor, the tidal waters of the open Atlantic, has proven to be the most devastating, assaulting the properties along the inner shore behind the barrier beach on high tides and storms.
The intrusion of the ocean into the once-calm backwaters that connect to Stage Harbor and Nantucket Sound raised tides by a foot or more, exposing that coastline to open ocean wave and tidal energy. ....

Barnstable Human Rights Commission Announces New Leadership

The Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission has new leadership for 2021. Dr. Kate Epperly, who was the immediate past Vice Chair to the Board, was voted in as Chair. Advisory member, Patricia Oshman, was elected to Vice-Chair.

Rev. Dr. Kate Epperly A lifelong community organizer and human rights advocate, Rev. Dr. Kate Epperly is an ordained pastor who has served congregations in California, Arizona, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. She retired in January after serving 7 years as Minister for Advocacy and Justice for Families and Children of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination.
Rev. Dr. Epperly served 3 years as Minister of Christian Union Church in North Truro, served as Coordinator of the Cape Cod Fellowship of Reconciliation, and was active in the Nauset Interfaith Association and its Refugee Support Team. Rev. Dr. Epperly currently serves on the Steering Committee of Barnstable N ....

Barnstable High School opens $1.2M environmental science and technology Lab

As head of Barnstable High School s new $1.2 million Environmental Science and Technology Lab, Michael Smith cannot wait to get to work.
Now entering his 18th year of teaching at BHS, Smith teaching environmental science and biology in the school s student-driven Environmental Science and Technology Pathway.
He also is collaborating with some of the region s most accomplished scientists – among them, Laurel Schaider of The Silent Spring Institute; Amy Costa of the Center for Coastal Studies; and Zenas Crocker, Barnstable Clean Water Coalition – to start a high school intership program. 
The new lab opened to BHS students Oct. 26. A partnership between Town Manager Mark Ells, a water engineer who worked with Brian Howe, professor of marine science and technology at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and Supt. Meg Mayo-Brown, the lab will help grow partnerships and collaborations with people who actually work in the in ....
